Curl Care

Detangling textured hair does not have to end in tears. This is what actually works.

Start at the Ends

Work from the ends upward in small sections, never from the roots down. Dragging a brush from the scalp pushes every knot ahead of it into one bigger knot.

Wet, and Slippery

Curls are most fragile when dry. Detangle on damp hair with conditioner or a leave-in still in it, so the brush glides rather than pulls.

Section It

Four sections, clipped apart, is faster than fighting the whole head at once — and far less painful.

Hold Above the Knot

Hold the hair just above where you are brushing. The tension stays in your hand instead of at the scalp, which is what usually hurts.

Little and Often

A few minutes most days beats a long battle once a week.

At Night

A satin or silk bonnet or pillowcase keeps moisture in and friction down, so there is less to detangle in the morning.
